Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Friday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. Despite the controversy that greeted the transfer of Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Fatai Owoseni, the Command has now announced a change of guard following the official handover of the State to the new Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi. The state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, in a statement on Thursday, said Owoseni never refused the order of the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to vacate office for his successor.

2. The Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, Thursday assigned portfolios to the newly appointed State Commissioners. Speaking at a brief meeting with the commissioners at the Council Chambers in the Governor’s office, Akeredolu enjoined members of the State Executive Council to hit the ground running in their respective Ministry.

3. Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State has described those protesting demolition of the Ekeukwu market in the state capital, which resulted to the death of a 10-year-old boy, as non-indigenes. In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, sam Onwuemeodo, the governor said those behind Thursday press conference in Abuja or involved in protest over the relocation of Ekeukwu Market were not Owerri indigenes but few politicians from the state mostly of the PDP extraction.

4. The Lagos State Government has donated N5m to the family of Mr. Osaze Omorogbe, a community leader who lost his life after leading security agents to kidnappers’ zone. Presenting the cheque to the widow and children of the victim on behalf of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, at the family’s residence in Isawo, Ikorodu, Special Adviser to the Governor on Community and Communications, Mr. Kehinde Bamigbetan, referred to the late Omoregbe as a hero.

5. President Muhammadu Buhari’s Personal Assistant on Social Media, Lauretta Onochie has said the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu is notorious and not popular and must be disregarded by the Igbos. She said was not fighting for the interests of the South East people. Onochie made the remark while sharing a photograph of a man prostrating and kissing Kanu’s feet on her Twitter handle.

6. President Muhammadu Buhari has finally reacted to the flood in Benue State, which has rendered over 100,000 persons homeless. The president said he received with great concern reports of the flooding in the state, which wreaked havocs in 12 local government areas. He directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to immediately mobilize personnel and resources to come to the aid of the victims of the flooding. A statement by the presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu said the President was closely monitoring the situation, and will be receiving regular updates on the scale of the disaster, as well as the Federal Government’s humanitarian response.

7. A video clip emerged of a former militant leader, Asari Dokubo, where he said that anyone who is not in support of Biafra agitation is a traitor, and his generation will spit on the face and grave for betraying them. Dokubo said the future of his children lies with Biafra.

8. The Akwa Ibom State governor, Udom Emmanuel, has promised the Super Eagles $10,000 for every goal they score against Cameroon in their 2018 World Cup qualifier in Uyo on Friday. The governor also redeemed his pledge of $30,000 to the Eagles for their 3-1 win against Algeria in a 2018 World Cup Group B qualifier last year.

9. The naira, yesterday, further appreciated in the parallel market following the injection of $297 million into the interbank foreign exchange market by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The parallel market exchange rate dropped to N365 per dollar from N366 per dollar on Wednesday.

10. The Benue State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress has declared one-week warning strike. The industrial action is expected to commence on Tuesday, September 5, 2018 over the refusal of the state government to pay workers’ salaries for several months. In a statement issued at the end of the State Executive Council of both the NLC and the Trade Union Congress, held at the NLC secretariat located along Otukpo Road, Makurdi, the workers stated that the strike would end on September 13.
