Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Friday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. Report has it that a combined team of the Nigerian Army, the Police and the DSS Thursday invaded the home of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The spokesman for the group, Emma Powerful has claimed that the whereabouts of Kanu, his parents and his siblings could not be ascertained. Powerful claimed that many of their members in front of Kanu’s house during the invasion were killed and injured.

2. Following the growing tension in Abia State, especially the capital-Umuahia and the commercial centre of Aba, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris has posted Anthony Michael Ogbizi as the new Police Commissioner for the State Command. This was announced in a statement signed and issued by the command spokesperson, Geoffrey Ogbonna, on Thursday.

3. A clash between some Igbo traders and Hausas in Plateau State on Thursday has resulted in the declaration of a dusk to dawn by the state governor, Simon Lalong in Jos, the State Capital. This was announced by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Samuel Nanle. Report says the clash resulted in the killing of many persons.

4. Report has it that 4 persons, including one Major Lawrence Ugbo were killed after crisis ensued between two rivals on Thursday in Ugobia, near Otukpo in Benue State. It was gathered that the rivals are two brothers identified as Ijachi and Benjamin Ejeh Udeh both born of the same parents in Ugboju Ehaje. Ijachi is a chieftain of the APC who was also caretaker Chairman of Otukpo LGC for one year and a loyalist to the Deputy Governor of Benue State, Engr Benson Abounu. The report claims the Thursday killing was a reprisal of an earlier attack by one of the brothers where a police officer was also killed.

5. The National Examinations Council Thursday released the June/July 2017 Senior Secondary Schools Certificate Examination results. The Registrar/Chief Executive of NECO, Prof. Charles Uwakwe, said that out of the 1,051,472 candidates who sat for the examination, only 70.85 percent of the candidates got five credits and above, including English Language and Mathematics.

6. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed that plans were underway to extradite former Minister of Petroluem, Diezani Alison-Madueke. The EFCC acting chairman, Ibrahim Magu, made this known while addressing journalists, civic groups and others.

7. Minister of Women Affairs, Senator Aisha Alhassan on Thursday appeared before the National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress over her controversial comment regarding her open support for Atiku Abubakar. The Minister met the APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun with the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi.

8. A Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Thursday, remanded 30 suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra in prison custody. The suspected IPOB members were arrested on Tuesday by the operatives of the Rivers State Police Command for allegedly engaging in violent acts that breached the peace in the Oyigbo Local Government Area of the state. Nine of them were accused of killing a police sergeant, Steven Daniel during the crisis.

9. The Nigerian Army on Thursday insisted that the Operation Python Dance in Abia State will continue despite the announcement by the State governor, Okezie Ikpeazu that troops would be withdrawn on Friday. A statement by the Army says the rumour credited to the governor should be disregarded as its men are going nowhere.

10. The Lagos State Police Commissioner, Imohimi Edgal, has disclosed that the commend had arrested six persons over the killing of Hector Jobarteh, winner of third edition, Gulder Ultimate Search, GUS. The culprits were among the five suspected robbers, five suspected kidnappers, three suspected cultists earlier paraded alongside a dog at the Command’s Headquarters, Ikeja.
