Nigerian News: 10 things you need to know this Thursday evening

Good evening! Here is today’s Nigeria news summary.

1. The Court of Appeal in Abuja on Thursday threw out a case filed before it by Temipre Silva, challenging the election of Seriake Dickson as Bayelsa State Governor.

The five-man panel of Justices, thus dismissed the joint appeal of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and its governorship candidate in the state noting that the appeal lacked merit.

2. Nemesis has caught up with one of the leaders of the Niger Delta Avengers, Abraham Suru otherwise known as Gabon.

Suru, who was arrested by the Nigerian Navy around Sapele Council Area of Delta State, admitted that he was the one behind the recent attacks on oil pipelines within Warri North and South-West Council Areas of the state.

3. Former Governor of Plateau State and Senator representing Plateau Central has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Having written officially to the Senate, the letter which was read by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki at the close of today’s plenary, the ex-Governor of Plateau State crossed immediately from the wing where his former party members sat and joined his new partymen,

4. The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry has stated that the ongoing economic recession of Nigeria will last for five years. The group said the recent statement by the Central Bank of Nigeria’s governor, Godwin Emefiele that the current economic recession will end before December was a utopian dream.

5. A Yola High Court, Thursday granted bail to the immediate past Governor of Adamawa, Mr Bala Ngilari.

Ngilari, who was arraigned over alleged N167 million contract processing without due process was granted bail by Justice Nathan Musa in the sum of N100 million with a surety who must have a landed property in Yola metropolis.

6. A Federal High Court in Jos has declared Shehu Dikko, the Chairman of League Management Company (LMC), wanted for contempt.

The warrant also demanded the arrest of Salihu Abubakar, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of LMC for similar offence.

7. The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has vowed to go on with the planned September 23 worldwide rally in protest against the continuous incarceration of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu by the Federal Government.

The group had warned residents of the South East to stay in-doors on Friday as a mark of solidarity for Kanu.

8. Members of the National Economic Council, NEC, on Thursday expressed support for the plans and proposals of the Federal Government to help the country out of recession.

NEC in its meeting on Thursday presided over by Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, acknowledged the current economic challenges and difficulties.

9. President Muhammadu Buhari has appealed to the United Nations to prevail on western countries to return stolen funds kept in their banks.

Buhari, who made this appeal while speaking at the high level meeting of the UN General Assembly to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Declaration on the Right to Development, noted that if developing nations are deprived of such funds, it becomes difficult for them to meet their needs.

10. The Nigerian currency, Naira on Thursday crashed further against the major currencies in all the segments of the market.

At the interbank market, the naira fell by 2.99 points to close at N313.07 from N310. 08 recorded on Wednesday. At the Bureau De Change segment of the market, the naira traded at N424, N549 and N468 to the dollar, Pound Sterling and the Euro respectively.
