Nigerian journalists are the best, despite inconducive circumstances – Plateau government

The Chief Whip and Member representing Kanke Constituency in Plateau State House of Assembly, Hon. Timothy Golu, has described Nigerian journalists as the best in the world despite the unfavourable environment that characterize their profession. He said the environment available to Nigerian journalists was capable of killing their vision.

He disclosed this on Friday, while presenting sets of furniture to the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Plateau State Council, in Jos.

According to him, “I want to commend you for the services you have been rendering to this nation. The Nigerian Press is one of the best in the world. I have travelled to many countries in this world and we have related with journalists, even with the best of facilities and conducive environment, they are not doing what we are doing here.

Adding that, “We are doing wonders; we are performing magic under the circumstances in Nigeria. It takes perseverance, determination, strength, character and patriotism to be able to do what you are doing. You are not doing it for yourself, but for God, and your country.

The Lawmaker, who was a journalist himself, further applauded the media, saying it has helped in changing many things in the country.

He further explained that, “If not for the media, the whole country, the entire world would have been blind.

We would have lost our conscience as individuals, as a government, as a people and as a globe.

The Lawmaker who is also a member, House Committee on Information, maintained that, “People say we are the fourth estate of the realm, I see it as the first estate of the realm, it’s just because of the convenience of the bureaucratic hierarchy that we are given that name”.

Golu further stated that the sets of furniture donated was to show solidarity and also commend the media for what they have been doing and what they are equally passing through, promising to do more in future.

In his response, Chairman of the Council, Mr. Katdapba Gobum, appreciated the Lawmaker, saying “As a member of the House, you have been able to use your resources in order to help our members find comfort in sitting down to write your reports. We thank you for that and pray that God will reward you”.
