Nigerian govt to meet striking doctors Wednesday

Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, on Monday appealed to resident doctors to suspend their strike.

Adewole assured the doctors of government’s readiness to address contentious issues.

He expressed the administration’s determination to promote industrial harmony in the health sector.

Adewole also announced date for a meeting with the health practitioners.

“Another round of meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday, September 6, 2017 and it is hoped that more progress would have been made in reaching consensus in all the issues being discussed,” he said.

Resident Doctors on Monday morning announced the commencement of an indefinite industrial action.

The decision to embark on strike was disclosed by the National Association of Resident Doctors, NARD, President, Dr. Onyebueze John in Abuja.

Disclosing that the offer from government was rejected, John said, “Rising from our NEC meeting, which started by 7pm yesterday and ended 3am today.”

“NARD has resolved to reject the promissory offer from Government, and proceed on total and indefinite strike action until all items in her demand list for strike action are resolved by Government.”
