Nigerian elections 2019: INEC speaks on resumption of political campaigns

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned political parties and their candidates against campaigns.

INEC chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, said this at a press briefing with major stakeholders on Saturday.

The electoral chief spoke while reacting to a question by Osita Chidoka, a representative of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The former Minister had requested for campaigns, which ended Thursday night.

He wanted parties and candidates to continue to speak about their programmes and policies till the rescheduled dates for the polls.

In his response, the chairman said, “No, political actors are to remain silent.”

The INEC had on Saturday shifted the conduct of the Presidential and National Assembly elections to Feb. 23.

The governorship, house of assembly, FCT area council elections were also shifted from March 2 to March 9.

INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, attributed the decision of the commission to logistic and operational problems.

He said the postponement would afford the commission the opportunity to address the identified challenges in order to maintain the quality of Nigeria’s elections.
