The Super Eagles on Sunday, lost 2-0 to Madagascar, in their final Group B fixture at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations.
Nigeria came into the match on top of the group, following their consecutive 1-0 wins over Burundi and Guinea.
Although Gernot Rohr made five changes to his starting line-up, the three-time champions were still expected to have too much for the debutants.
However, Lalaina Nomenjanahary pounced on Leon Balogun’s slip in the 13th minute, to give Madagascar a shock lead.
The Eagles came out fighting in the second half, but Carolus Andriamahitsinoro made it 2-0 and all but ended the encounter as a contest.
Madagascar finish top with seven points, while Nigeria are runners-up with six points.
