Head coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, has given reasons why his side’s target at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations’ was to get to the semi-final.
One of Rohr’s reasons was that the Super Eagles are currently number three in Africa.
Rohr’s men have already achieved their target after beating South Africa at the quarter-final encounter on Wednesday night.
They will now tackle Algeria in the semi-final at the Cairo International Stadium on Sunday.
Addressing reporters ahead of Nigeria’s clash with Algeria, Rohr said: “Our target was to get to the AFCON semi-final stage because we are number three in Africa so we have to be in this position also to be on that level. But it was so difficult because the game was very close.”
He added: “We had to wait until the last minute to score a second goal against South Africa. We didn’t score the second goal in the first half but in the second half, we were punished. We are looking forward to the next game.”
Nigeria beat Algeria 3-1 in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers in Uyo and were held to a 1-1 draw in the return leg. But the result was overturned and the North Africans awarded a 3-0 win after FIFA punished Nigeria for fielding an ineligible player, Abdullahi Shehu.
