The League Management Company (LMC), has announced that the new season of the Nigeria Professional Football League, will kick off on March 7, 2015.

Nduka Irabor, the chairman of the LMC, says the late resumption date, is to ensure that outstanding issues are resolved.

Irabor also noted that the date was picked with the 2015 general elections in the country coming up in February.

“The new season will start by March 7. There are many reasons to do that – we need to replenish the league body, the footballers needs to rest and also meet with their friends.

“It to give us enough time to look into the some problems observed last season -which is one of the most embarrassing mean the welfare of the players themselves,” Irabor told Goal.

“You remember how we struggled to make sure there provision to make regular payment of recent salaries, this time we want that to be adopted within the time. More that anything else, we are giving clubs more time to clear their backlogs.

“We have to realise the environment in which we operate, we are not in Europe and We have general elections and it’s second week of February,” he continued.

“Often time, electioneering campaign is taking place in our football arena. we don’t want to struggle for space and time with politicians. We have to wait for politicians to settle down on the sit of governance for them to give money.

“Football is beyond kicking the ball, it is actually a big process. Every year, for more than 20 years now, we just rush-in and rush-out of the season without taking time to reflect or improve on what we have done in course of the season.

“We intend to change and improve upon many things and already working hard to achieve more as because as we need to replenish the body.”
