Nigeria News: 10 things you need to know this Tuesday evening

Good evening! Here is summary of today’s Nigeria news :

1. Embattled former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki on Tuesday floored the Nigerian government after the court ordered for his release. The court also ordered that N15m should be paid to him for ‘unlawful detention.’

2. ‎The Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, on Tuesday, declared former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godsday Orubebe, guilty of false declaration of asset.

CCT chairman, Danladi Umaranladi Umar, in his verdict held that Orubebe committed an offence for not declaring a piece of property in Abuja, which the former minister claimed he had sold.

3. The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has arraigned a former chairman of Benue State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Mr Iho Anum Achusa, and a staff of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) Abuja, Mr Donald Orya Anagenda, for alleged conspiracy, bribery and using their offices to confer corrupt advantage on themselves.

The two officers were arraigned before Honourable Justice A.O Anum of Benue state High Court No.2, Makurdi on a 4-count charge of contravening sections 12, 18(d), 19 and 26(1c) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000.

4. President Muhammadu Buhari has sent the 2017-2019 Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP), ahead of the 2017 budget, to the National Assembly.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, who read the letter at plenary stated that the document would provide the framework for the development of the 2017 budget.

5. Immediate past Minister of environment, Mrs. Laurentia Laraba Mallam and her 73 year-old husband, Mr Pius Mallam have been kidnapped.

The couple were whisked away about 8 pm on Monday while returning to Kaduna from the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

6. Unknown gunmen have assassinated a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Hon. Boris Naenwi, and three persons at Nonwa community in Tai local government area of the state.

The deceased, a native of Yeghe community in Gokana local government area of the state, and the three others, including a girl, were riding in the same vehicle when the assassins ambushed the vehicle and opened fire on them.

7. The Ohanaeze Ndigbo has begged the Federal Government to create another state from the South-East geo-political zone.

Dr Ezechinyere Chukwu, who spoke in Owerri, the state capital, after inaugurating the Ehime Mbano Chapter of the Igbo social political group, noted that the creation of additional state will reduce the agitation against alleged marginalisation.

8. The All Progressives Congress has once again accused the Peoples Democratic Party of bringing Nigeria into the current economic mess. The Ekiti State chapter of the party on Tuesday said Buhari inherited an ailing economy from the past government, hence the reason for the dwindling fortunes of the economy.

9. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has asked Nigerians to expect more arrests and trials of those who milked Nigeria’s treasury dry.

EFCC chairman, Ibrahim Magu, who spoke at the “Unveiling of the EFCC Creative Youths Initiative against Corruption” in Abuja, disclosed that a new campaign, “EFCC Women Against Corruption initiative” would be launched in November by the Wife of the President, Hajiya Aisha Buhari.

10. The Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) has called on the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to free its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

The group said it was seeking justice over the refusal of the FG to free Kanu despite the standing order by the court, adding that the FG’s action against Kanu was unlawful.
