The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Nsukka branch has expressed sadness over the death of Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, describing him as one of the best judges the country has produced since independence.

Speaking on Oputa’s death, the Chairman of the Nsukka NBA, Barr. Gerald Eze, stated that Nigeria had lost one of its finest legal icons.

“I received the death of Oputa with shock and sadness. His death has robbed the county of dedicated, honest and patriotic legal luminary.

“The vacuum created by the death of this philosopher, intellectual powerhouse and legal icon will take time to be filled”, he said.

Eze urged upcoming judges to see the late Oputa as their model by emulating his honesty and transparency in the discharge of their judiciary duties.

He observed that “Oputa served his fatherland with patriotism; it was as a result of his dedication that he became a Judge of the Supreme Court.

“The late legal luminary stood for justice no matter whose ox is gored, this earned him good reputation at the national and the international level.

“The Oputa panel, which he chaired, till today, has remain a good reference point on political and legal issues”.

The NBA chairman urged the family members of Oputa to take solace that their father lived a fruitful live as well as gave his county the best while alive.

“The best they can do for him is to follow his good legacies by being honest and God fearing in all their undertakings.

“The history of Nigeria judiciary will be incomplete without mentioning the immense contributions of Justice Oputa.

“My prayer is that, God will grant him eternal rest”, he added.
