“Nigeria elections were credible” – Commonwealth releases observer report

The Commonwealth Observer Group to the March 28 presidential and National Assembly elections has released its report on the elections.

A statement from Mr. Will Henley, the Communications Officer at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London, announced the release on Friday.

The report described the elections as “credible, peaceful, transparent and reflected the will of the people of Nigeria.

“The Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma has released the report of the Commonwealth Observer Group to Nigeria’s presidential and National Assembly elections on March 28, 2015.

“The Commonwealth Observer Group was led by Dr Bakili Muluzi, former President of Malawi,” it said.

The statement quoted Muluzi as saying that the elections marked an important step forward for democracy in Nigeria.

“These elections mark an important step forward for democracy in Africa’s most populous country, and a key member of the Commonwealth.

“Notwithstanding the organisational and technical deficiencies, the conduct of the presidential and National Assembly elections was credible, peaceful, transparent and reflected the will of the people of Nigeria.

“Our report includes a number of recommendations which, we believe, could further improve the electoral process in Nigeria.

“We hope they will be positively considered and implemented,” the report quoted Muluzi as writing in the foreword to the report.

The statement said the report had been sent to stakeholders in Nigeria, including the Federal Government, political parties and the Independent National Electoral Commission. (NAN)
