Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has described the postponement of the general elections as pathetic and worrisome.
The congress urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to focus on interest of Nigerians in its conduct than individual interests.
The Chairman of the Congress in Bayelsa, Mr Tari Dounana told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Yenagoa that the postponement was not in the interest of Nigerians and democracy.
“In fact, I must tell you the postponement was not only shocking to me but to the entire world.
“We, as Nigerian must learn how to grow out of this kind of play or drama that is not speaking well of the country.
“This postponement is very pathetic; believe me, this will make people to lose confidence and trust in INEC.
“I will advise INEC to focus on the interest of Nigerians instead of individuals. The nation has come of age and this kind of drama is something that can create fear and tension.
“The INEC should desist from doing something that can cause worry. We must look beyond material gains and move the nation forward,” the Chairman stated.
Mr Keneth Owei, a civil servant, decried the postponement and said the eleventh hour postponement by the INEC was not good enough.
“To me, this eleventh hour postponement cannot guarantee free, fair and credible elections. It is very disappointing,” Owei said.
INEC had postponed the general elections to February 23.
