Nigeria Decides: PDP accuses INEC of systemic manipulation of voters’ register

PDP accuses INEC of systemic manipulation of voters’ register

A few days to the presidential election, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Thursday said it has uncovered an alleged plot by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to corrupt the voters’ register.

It also alleged that the hidden purpose for the unlawful activity was to enhance the electoral fortune of the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC, against the true expression of the will of the electorate through the ballot boxes.

PDP National chairman, Prince Uche Secondus disclosed this while briefing newsmen in Abuja.

In his words, ” It is clear that INEC did not, in fact, do a clean up of the register of voters before it published it. It is very easy to calculate that they could not have done so.

“If, as they claim, there are 84 million voters, each with 10 fingerprints – then clearly there are 840 million fingerprints. If they were to match all fingerprints against each other, then they would have to perform an enormous number of calculations – more than seven times 10 to the power of 11 matches.

“INEC cannot currently perform one million such matches per second, even if they were able to do one million matches per second, it would take them more than 810,000 days.

“If they were able to do a billion matches, it would still take them 810 days. They clearly cannot not have done the duplication of the voters’ register. How many duplicate voters are there? 20 million, 30 million?

“In previous INEC administrations this eventuality was mitigated by administrative arrangements wherein a voter did accreditation in the morning and voted in the afternoon. So, if a voter wanted to vote twice, say at A and B, they would have to go to A and get accredited, then go to B and also get accredited, and then go back to A to vote and, go to B to vote – an onerous regimen that prevented cultivating.

“In the new continuous voting regime, this administrative support measure has been disposed of specifically to facilitate multiple voting by a huge number of APC voters”.

Also, Secondus said that the current voters’ register contains the data of dead voters, alleging that Permanent voter cards for dead voters were printed and distributed nationwide.
