Some Nigerian celebrities have reacted to the postponement of the Saturday’s elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
Addressing a press conference in the early hours of Saturday in Abuja, INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu said the presidential election was shifted to February 23 while the governorship was rescheduled for March 9.
Yakubu explained that the shift was due to problems of logistics.
He explained that the decision to postpone the polls followed a careful review of the implementation of the logistics and operational plans put in place for the exercise.
Reacting, Nollywood actress, Uche Jombo Rodriquez described INEC’s decision as disappointing.
In a tweet, she wrote: “Uche Jombo Rodriguez This is very disappointing @inecnigeria International observers are in Nigeria, youth corpers assigned to you are sleeping on floor ,people travelled to vote, budget spent, Its been 4years in the making yet you waited till today.. election day to postpone it. Come 23rd February #NigeriaDecides2019
“Make no mistake, this is a very important election, people please don’t let today shift your focus. Your vote is your right.”
A-list Nigerian Disk Jokey, DJ Spinal also lamented over the postponement of the elections.
“You had 4 years to plan an election but decide to postpone a day to election. Are you guys even serious at all @inecnigeria! Smh,” he posted on his verified Twitter handle.
Similarly, son of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, Aliyu wondered if INEC was truly independent.
He tweeted: “Expecting Adams Oshiomole to release a statement accusing INEC of working for PDP in a few hours!
“INEC is truly independent indeed!?”
