The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Niger State says it is not expecting free and fair election in the state if the present Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) Dr Emmanuel Onucheyo is not removed.

The party said it based its fears on the fact that the official is a member of the PDP.

In a statement signed by the publicity secretary of the APC in the state, Mr Jonathan Vatsa, PDP said in as much as the party had continued to express her faith in the current democratic dispensation, the lofty principles and tenets of democracy were being threatened by the activities of some people entrusted with the midwifery of the system.

“In Niger State, it is sad that the resident electoral commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Dr. Emammuel Onucheyo, the chief umpire, saddled with the constitutional responsibility of conducting elections – the most crucial aspect of democracy, has been found compromising and lagging behind in the discharge of his responsibilities”.

“The conduct and carriage of the REC left much to be desired. His antecedents, especially in the management and conduct of elections in the past are not just suspect but inimical to the healthy growth of our democracy”, it said.

The party recalled that it petitioned the national chairman of INEC, Professor Atahiru Jega, on the nefarious and dubious activities of the Niger State REC, lamenting that nothing had been done.

APC, therefore, urged INEC to take another look into the matter and do the needful before the 2015 polls.
