Niger Governor appoints 19 new permanent secretaries, vows to fire lazy ones

Niger State Governor, Abubakar Sani Bello, on Wednesday charged the newly appointed Permanent Secretaries to shun partisan politics and be ready to help him achieve promises made to the electorate.

He urged them to be committed to their responsibilities and shun mediocrity stressing that his government will not condone any act of indolence.

Bello said he will not hesitate to fire anyone found wanting in the line of duty and advised them to deliver with high sense of “humility, accountability, and above all fear of God”.

The Governor, who retired 16 Permanent Secretaries last week, stated this during the swearing in ceremony conducted by Justice Aliyu Maiyaki shortly before the weekly State Executive Council Meeting in Government House, Minna.

Bello said the new civil service helmsmen were expected to come on board with absolute loyalty and dedication to work, adding that they should be guided by the ethics and standards of the civil service.

He noted that their appointment was at a critical period when the service had been politicised by the past administration, hence the need for the new Permanent Secretaries to remain above board and be diligent to service delivery.

Bello said: “You are coming at a time your services are much needed to give a new direction in the implementation of government policies, programmes and as well help the political class to achieve our promises to the people”.

“Nothing less than the display of professionalism, expertise and good conduct will be acceptable from you as you bring your wealth of experience to bear on your new responsibilities”.

Two of the newly sworn in Permanent Secretaries have been in acting capacity while the remaining 17 were appointed after a competitive exercise on merit.

The state now has 27 Permanent Secretaries.
