Niger Delta Avengers commander, lieutenants surrender in Imo

A suspected Commander of the Niger Delta Avengers, General Felix Omereji, alongside other fighters of the group, on Wednesday surrendered their arms to the Imo State government.

This is coming barely 48-hours to the expiration of a one-week deadline the state Governor, Rochas Okorocha, issued to all remnants of the rampaging militant group in the oil producing areas of Ohaji/Egbema and Oguta, Local Government Area of the state to lay down their arms and embrace peace.

Okorocha had last week issued a one week deadline  to militants in the state to lay down their arms and embrace peace.

The governor gave the warning when members of a militant group, Niger Delta Red Squad, surrendered their arms.

Speaking during yesterday’s disarmament at the Imo International Convention Centre, IICC, General Felix explained why he boycotted the first phase of the programme last week.

According to Felix, he wanted to see the sincerity of the state government regarding those who surrendered.

Felix and the other lieutenants were encouraged to surrender their weapons and embrace peace, following the governor’s sincerity with regard to the first disarmament programme.

Regretting their attacks in oil producing areas of the state, Felix surrendered weapons ranging from AK-47 to explosives of various kinds.

Okorocha, while speaking at the event granted General Felix and his fighters pardon but noted that President Muhammadu Buhari would grant them amnesty.

He said, “We are here to receive our children who have been living in the forest for years, killing many people. I am your father. I will pardon you, while the president would grant you amnesty.”
