NHRC: We will not succumb to criticisms – Prof. Angwe


The Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, Prof. Bem Angwe has said that the commission will not bow to criticisms by some sections of Nigerians, but will rather continue to defend the rights of every Nigerians, including those of the critics.

Angwe, who made the assertion in Abuja while receiving members of the New Nigerians Conversation, NNC, who paid him a visit in his office, stated that although not every Nigerian is expected to agree with the commission, the Commission will not hesitate to act on the advise if it finds merit in some of the criticisms.

He however frowned against unnecessary criticisms made by some Nigerians to destabilizes and distract the focus of the commission, saying that no amount of criticisms will divert his attention from doing the right things so as to protect the rights of Nigerians.

According to him, “I want to state here that we will continue to carry out our duties and responsibilities without fear or favour. There is no friend or enemy that is capable of stopping us from doing what we are supposed to do, if it is in line with the provision of the law.

“We will not allow the misgivings of the few to track us down from carrying out these noble courses we intend to achieve. We will be encouraged by the commitment of the people like you who share the same vision with the commission” he said.

The Executive Secretary, who said that Nigeria is a democratic society, where everybody is free to express his opinion, condemned the attitude of some individuals and groups, who have made up their mind to say negative things against NHRC through publications so as to tarnish the image of the commission.

“We will be encouraged by these criticisms, because we derive our strength from these opinions, we also derive wisdom from some if these criticisms which help us to even carry out our assignment effectively” he stated.

Angwe, while welcoming members of the New Nigerians Conversation, promised to sign a Memorandum of Understanding, MOU with the organization so as to enable them work together to protect the rights of vulnerable Nigerians.

He also promised to assist the organization in the area of logistics each time they decide to organize programmes in the NHRC.

Coordinator of the NNC, Mr. Samuel Odaudu, in his address, expressed appreciation to the Executive Secretary and member of staff of the NHRC for the gesture done to them.

Odaudu, who commended the good works the commission is doing under the leadership of Prof. Angwe, solicited a partnership with the commission so as to work together to better the lives of Nigerians.
