NGO urges wealthy Nigerians, governments to address health sector challenges

An NGO, Daniel Ogechi Akujobi Memorial Foundation, on Friday urged wealthy Nigerians and the three tiers of government to brace up to the challenges facing the nation’s health sector.

Mrs Sorochi Ugorji, the foundation’s acting Programme Manager, made the plea in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

The foundation is a humanitarian organisation set up in 2006 in memory of the late Master Daniel Ogechi Akujobi (1992-2005), who died from head injuries he sustained in a motor accident.

“Considering the enormous problems facing Nigerians, an intervention fund should be set aside to combat various health challenges.

“Our organisation has put in place many intervention programmes aimed at correcting anomalies in the health sector.

“This informed our intervention in fighting hypertension by supporting Cardiovascular Society of Nigeria.

“The support is borne out of the reports of increasing rate of hypertension in the country as people living with this disease are on the increase,’’ Ugorji said.

“This calls for urgent attention as we cannot continue to sit and watch our population decreasing fast as a result of mortality and morbidity arising from hypertension.

“Cardiovascular Society will help to fight hypertension by offering free diagnosis, counselling and subsidised drugs for its treatment.’’
