Coalition Against Corruption and Insecurity in Nigeria (CACIN), an NGO, has commended INEC for postponing the 2015 general elections, describing it as a good development.
Mr Dachung Bagos, the Chairman of the organisation, said at a news briefing Abuja on Monday that the postponement would enable the Federal Government to provide adequate security in some parts of the country hit by insurgency.
“I am very happy that INEC took this bold step and went ahead to postpone the general elections.
“We need to ensure that there is adequate security and peace in every part of this country before any election can hold.
“The North East has been hit by insurgency and it has gotten worse lately; elections cannot hold in these areas peacefully, if the security situation is bad.”
He said that the postponement would allow the security forces to regain control of areas currently held by the insurgents and also enable INEC to address its challenges with the distribution of voters’ cards.
“The shift will also give opportunity to Nigerians who were unable to get their Permanent Voter Cards (PVC) to do so before the elections.
“The PVC is very important; without it one cannot vote and all eligible voters need to go and get theirs; voting is very important to our young democracy.”
The chairman urged Nigerians to support INEC to succeed in making the 2015 elections free, fair and credible.
While advising Nigerian youths not to make themselves available for electoral violence, he charged politicians to maintain peace and to shun acts that could incite their supporters to violence.
