No fewer than three persons have been confirmed dead after a two-storey building at 32/36 Ishaga Road, Surulere area of Lagos, collapsed on Sunday.

Residents say the incident occurred around 10 a.m. after a heavy downpour.

General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, said that five persons died. According to him, three out of the other five injured persons had been treated and discharged.

Other survivors are still being treated in the hospital.

However, spokesman of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Ibrahim Farinloye, said only four persons died.

The contradicting figures has again made public the disagreement on emergency operations between the two agencies.

In a brief on what might have led to the incident, Oke-Osanyintolu said that the building might have collapsed due to the use of substandard materials, adding that investigation was still ongoing.

On his part, NEMA maintained that four persons, including a 13-year old bread hawker died in the collapsed building.

Farinloye confirmed that two of those injured had been taken to the Accident and Emergency Unit on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway while another victim who needed surgical operation was taken to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH.

The official disclosed that the house had been marked two times for the developer to stop construction, but he ignored.

Also, in Lagos on Sunday, a 12 storey building was gutted by fire at about 8:00 a.m at Ademola Adetokunbo Way, Victoria Island.

Confirming the incident, Farinloye said that only the ground and first floors of the building were affected before the fire was put out.
