Nelson Mandela’s health may force Manchester City to cancel pre-season friendlies

Manchester City pre-season tour of South Africa, might not work out as planned, because of the health of the country’s former president, Nelson Mandela.

New coach of the former Premier League champions, Manuel Pellegrini, is expected to fly out next Thursday. However, if inany case Mandela gives up the ghost, there will immediately be a 10-day period of mourning, which will affect sporting events too.

One source told UK Mirror: “If a City game happens to be on the same day as the memorial service or funeral, I just can’t see it taking place.”

Court documents this week revealed that Mandela was on life support and he “is in a permanent vegetative state.”

City are scheduled to play SuperSport United on July 14 and Amazulu in Durban on July 18 – to mark Mandela’s 95th birthday.
