The Senator representing Borno South District in the National Assembly, Ali Ndume, has faulted the decision of the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress Party, APC, Adams Oshiomhole, to adopt Senate Leader, Ahmad Lawan, as the Senate President of the ninth Assembly.
According to him, the APC leadership informed the Senators-elect under the party, that Lawan was the next Senate President at a dinner with President Muhammadu Buhari at Aso Rock last night.
Ndume, while addressing journalists on Tuesday in Abuja, said that the choice of Lawan was an unpopular and unconstitutional decision.
He described it as a unilateral choice made by Oshiomhole.
According to him, Lawan’s imposition by the party leadership contravenes Section 50 (1) (A) of the 1999 constitution (as amended) which gave the Senators-elect the right to elect their leaders on the day of inauguration.
Ndume, however, said he would consult the leaders of the party in the North-East and his colleagues who are supporting his aspiration, before taking a final position on the issue.
He said, “All my colleagues at the occasion yesterday (Monday) were shocked when Adams Oshiomhole unilaterally announced his decision to endorse Lawan as candidate of the party.
“It is an unpopular decision because I am sure that President Buhari and other leaders of the party are not in support of that action. None of the stakeholders was also consulted.”
