The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), in Niger on Wednesday said it was expecting court’s approval to destroy 12, 000 tonnes of suspected illicit drugs in its exhibit warehouse in Minna.
Commander of NDLEA in Niger, Mr Joseph Iweajunwa, made this known in Minna while conducting newsmen round the warehouse.
He said, “Destruction of exhibits goes through processes; you will notify the headquarters and get approval before applying to the Federal High Court for approval.
“We have applied and we are waiting for the go ahead to destroy them’’.
Iwewajunwa, however, said that Niger was not a major cultivator of Indian hemp but a transit point.
According to him, “as a transit point, there is no way it will pass through the state without some quantity of the suspected illicit drugs getting to the people.
“We have seen some experimental farms in Niger state cultivated with yams, cassava and okra, so there is no major farm for cannabis here.’’
He said the command had sought advice and encouragement from people of the state on how to tackle drug abuse.
“It is the responsibility of all stakeholders to reduce or eradicate drug abuse in the state’’, he said. (NAN) .
