The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) is set to construct a model drug rehabilitation centre worth N60 million in Anambra State.
The Commander of the agency in the state, Mr Sule Momodu, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Monday.
Momodu said that, when completed, the centre would facilitate prosecution of suspected drug peddlers.
He said that the N60 million had been donated to the agency by the Anambra State Government, adding that the government had also donated 5,000 square metres of land for the project.
“The governor also approved N15 million for cleaning of the place, where the most potent drug in the world, methamphetamine, was first discovered to be produced in Nanka area of the state.
“If not cleaned, it could cause great danger to the health of people living around and children unborn in the area,” he said.
According to him, chemicals used for methamphetamine are hazardous and can kill plants and grasses in the area if not cleaned.
He commended the state Governor, Mr Willie Obiano, for the donation.
He told NAN that the command was determined to uncover any other methamphetamine production sites in the state.
“Whoever uses it becomes a super human and can do the unthinkable.
“We have not been able to locate other production sites after the discovery of the one at Nanka Community; now, we have discovered that people are already consuming it in the state,” he said.
According to Momodu, Obiano has approved a reward of N500, 000 for anyone who can help to discover other places where the substance is being produced in the state.
He called on the public to assist the command with useful information on the activities of illicit drug dealers, promising that the command would continue to discharge its duties well.
