NDLEA seize 6,726,012 kilograms of hard drugs in Kano

Dr. Ibrahim Abdul, the Commander, National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Kano State says the command has seized the total of 6,726,012 kilograms of hard drugs from June 2018 to date.

The commander made the disclosure at a press briefing on Tuesday in Kano as part of commemoration of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking.

He said, within the period under review, the command had successfully intercepted 3,201,155 kilograms of cannabis satiba.

Abdul added that the command had also seized 3,370,911 kilograms of psychotropic,150.007 kilograms of khat, a marijuana-like leaf that is imported from South Africa.

He further revealed that 3.190 kilograms of cocaine had been intercepted by the command within the one year.

The NDLEA Boss also disclosed that the agency has within the period in review seized 29.3 kilograms of heroin.

Giving further breakdown of the success achieved, Abdul said the command had arrested 725 suspects, out of which 620 are male while 105 are female.

“This is unprecedented success that has never been achieved within a short period of time since the establishment of this command,” he said

The commander further disclosed that the command had secured the conviction of 47suspects nabbed with cocaine and heroin.

He further revealed that the command had successfully arrested suspected notorious members of a drug syndicate en route to Saudi Arabia with 2.92 kilograms of cocaine.

“The statistics recorded shows a decline in the demand and supply of some substances such as tramadol and codeine, as a result of this our constant operations by the officers of the Kano State command,” said the commander

He, however, stated that lack of adequate manpower, shortage of logistics, lack of enough facilities to accommodate the teaming addicts that require counselling and rehabilitation are some of the command’s major challenges.

Also, lack of enough cooperation from some communities is one of the challenges bedevilling the command in the discharge of our duties.
