Two men, Sunday Ojo, 59, and 47-year-old Obinna Igwebuike, have been nabbed at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, by officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, for trying to smuggle drugs to New York and London respectively.
Sunday Ojo, 59, a timber merchant, who hails from Osun State, was arrested with 1.090 kilogrammes of heroin during the screening of passengers on a Delta Airline flight bound for New York,.
Ojo, who is married to two wives and have five children, said he went into the world of drugs because he had to settle his debt.
The NDLEA Commander at the Lagos Airport, Hamza Umar, while reacting to Ojo’s arrest, said: “NDLEA preliminary investigation shows that Ojo Sunday Akanmu Olusegun, who hails from Ilesha, Osun State ingested seventy-five wraps of substances that tested positive for heroin.”
He said the suspect, during interrogation, admitted his involvement in drug trafficking and that it was due to financial hardship.
The other drug trafficker identified as Obinna Igwebuike swallowed six wraps of cocaine and inserted six more wraps of the drugs in his anus totaling 335 grammes.
Igwebuike was arrested on a Virgin Atlantic flight to London Heathrow.
While giving a confessional statement, Igweibuike, a father of two, stated that he would have made one million naira from the deal if he had pulled it through.
“I sell electronics at Alaba market in Lagos. I agreed to smuggle drugs because I would have made a million naira to invest in my business.”
“I also needed money to take care of my family. I am married with two children,” he said.
The anti-narcotics agency noted that both suspects will be arraigned in court soon.
