The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on Monday said that it had identified 128 illegal telecoms operators in Kano State.
In its ‘’Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement Reports for the Fourth Quarter of 2014’’ obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, the commission said that it discovered the illegal operators through its zonal offices.
NCC said that the illegal operators ran cyber cafes, sold accessories and undertook installation services.
According to the commission, a pre-enforcement notice has been issued to the operators, advising that they should commence regularisation/registration.
“While the commission encourages the establishment of cyber cafes as strategy to deepen internet penetration, it is, however, concerned that these businesses should be registered as part of measures to track cyber crimes.
“The pre-enforcement notice is consistent with Section 89 of the Nigerian Communications Act 2003 which mandates the commission to monitor all significant matters relating to the performance of all licensed telecoms service providers.
“The NCC has developed Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement strategies to prosecute the above mandate and achieve the commission’s objective of fair competition, ethical market conduct and optimal quality of service in Nigeria’s telecommunications industry,” it added.
The commission said that it carried out enforcement actions in December, 2014 on some companies in Lagos for using the 5.4GHz spectrum without requisite authorisation.
It said that the companies included Steam Broadcasting Ltd, Netcom Africa, Swift Talk Ltd, Multi-dimensions Ltd, Zeta- web Nigeria Ltd and IPNX Nigeria Ltd.
NCC added that it had directed the companies to regularise their usage of the frequency band or risk regulatory sanction, accordingly. (NAN)
