Navy vs Police: Military constitutes panel to probe Calabar clash

The Defence Headquarters has set up a high profile committee to investigate the remote and immediate causes of the recent clash between personnel of the Nigerian Navy and Police in Calabar, Cross River State.

The incident led to loss of lives and destruction of property.

Major General John Eneche, Defenece spokesman, in a statement on Tuesday said the committee comprises senior officers from the Nigerian Army, Navy, Airforce and Police.

It added that “The committee is mandated to recommend appropriate sanction or sanctions to anyone or group of people that are found culpable in the avoidable incident.

“This is aimed at checkmating and subsequently eliminating such incidents in the future, in order to enhance the relationship between the Military and other Security and Response Agencies in Nigeria.

“The Defence Headquarters hereby appeal to members of all Security and Response Agencies to embrace espirit de corps in the course of carrying out their duties and have mutual respect and understanding for each other.”

Recall that the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, warned officers and men of the Cross River State Police Command not to retaliate the attack by some personnel of the Navy.

A few days later, Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) Vice Admiral Ibok Ete-Ibas, issued a similar warning to ratings.
