Worried by the spate of fuel tanker tragedies on Nigeria’s highways, Senator Gbenga Ashafa representing Lagos East, has expressed serious concern over the fate of rail line projects of the past administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Moving the motion on Wednesday, he recalled that close to four fuel tanker accidents had occurred recently in Nigeria’s two major cities claiming lives and destroying properties worth millions of naira.
The Senate, therefore, maintained that the federal government of President Muhammadu Buhari must do all it could to find lasting solution, instead of palliative measures that were the case with past governments.
One of such lasting solutions, the Senate noted, was functional refineries, so that the lifting of fuel would not be concentrated at the ports giving the inadequacy of road networks for operation of trucks and tankers.
Accordingly, the Senate resolved that the present administration should continue the process of revamping the rail system to ease off the pressure on the Nigeria roads.
They equally called on the federal government to revamp the existing refineries.
