The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, on Tuesday, urged the chamber’s 38-man ad hoc Committee on Welfare to be fair in its dealings with members.
Represented by the Deputy Speaker, Yusuf Lasun, the Speaker said the Committee must ensure fair allocation of available office accommodation to the lawmakers.
He said that “in carrying out our duties, it is important that all members are treated in a fair, just and equitable manner to avert charges of favouritism.
“As we all know, the House of Representatives under our watch preaches equality of all members.
“This stems from the fact that it is the same constitutional mandate we carry on behalf of our various constituents and for which we must remain accountable at all times.
“We should be guided by existing precedence in sitting arrangements in the chamber and office accommodation.
“I charge this committee, therefore, to act swiftly but judiciously to ensure minimum level of convenience and comfort to enable the lawmakers to settle down fast for legislative duties without delay.’’
Order 18 Rule 117 of the Standing Orders of the House provides that the House constitutes an ad hoc committee on welfare within 30 days from its first sitting.
Members of the committee are drawn from among the members to reflect Federal Character.
The committee is chaired by Rep. Nasiru Illa (Kano), while Rep. Igbinedion Omosede (Edo) is the Deputy Chairman.
Some members of the committee are Rep. Toby Okechukwu (Enugu), Adamu Entonu (Benue) and Eucharia Azodo (Anambra). (NAN)
