The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Friday called on President Muhammadu Buhari to sign into law the Nigeria Peace Corps bill.
The call was made by the Senate President, (NANS), Comrade Oyejide Salam, in an interactive session with newsmen in Jos. He was speaking during an Advocacy Campaign tour on the already passed bill.
Salam said, “We want to appeal to president Muhammadu Buhari to listen to the request of Nigerians and put his ascent to the bill.
According to him, the office of the NANS Senate President is advocating for the creation of Jobs, proper budget implementations on projects that could employ Nigerian graduates and well-meaning youths.
He added that for over 18 years, a voluntary organization through it’s vibrant leader, Dr. Dickson Akoh who is the founder and pioneer of the Corps, had worked hard to ensure that a chunk of Nigerian youths are employed through the Peace Corps platform.
“The rate of unemployment in Nigeria is a scourge that is prevalent amidst the youth which comprises the majority of the masses”, he stressed.
It would be recalled that the Senate had on 24th November, 2016, passed the Nigerian Peace Corps Bill into law, which gave approval for the establishment of the Nigerian Peace Corps as an agency under the Ministry of Interior.
The Senate Committee on Interior had presented its report on the floor of the floor upper chamber.
Chairman of the Committee, Senator Bayero Nafada urged the Senate to support the passage of the Bill, saying “the organisation will be of great benefit to the Nigerian youths.”
“In response to increasing complexity of the factors responsible for insecurity and the method by which peace and security is being undermined in Nigeria, there is need to develop comprehensive, multi-sectoral, multi-stakeholders and inclusive approaches in order to stem these threats,” he said.
The Committee had also recommended that the Nigerian Peace Corps and the National Unity and Peace Corps should be merged as one, since both formations appear the same.
