NANS names Jonathan Grand Commander of Nigerian Students amid division in leadership

Despite the disunity rocking its fold, the National Association Of Nigerian Students, NANS, has bestowed on President Goodluck Jonathan, the title of the Grand Commander of Nigerian Students.

The development came barely 48 hours after zonal leaders of the union, kicked against the endorsement of President Jonathan for a second term by the association’s national leader, Yinka Gbadebo.

On Friday, a delegation led by Mr. Jonathan’s senior special assistant on youth affairs, Jude Imagwe and NANS president, Gbadebo, said they decided to honour the president because of the positive impact of his Transformation Agenda.

Addressing the group, President Jonathan reiterated his commitment to returning ‎Nigerian universities to winning ways by ensuring they were rated among the top in the world, stressing that the tertiary institutions would not just be big in population but in quality as well.

The President also stressed his commitment to free, fair and credible elections.

He said Nigeria would no longer become a laughing stock as far as credible elections were concern.

Among the delegation were 10 former NANS presidents, ‎8 former NANS Senate presidents, student union presidents in universities, polytechnics, monotechnics and colleges of education.

The President thanked the students for the award and words of encouragement, which he said would spur his administration to do more.
