The ‘factional’ President of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Chukwunonso Obasi, has been expelled by the association for acts it described as ‘impersonation’ and ‘sacrilege’.
According to the NANS, Obasi was alleged to have written frivolous petitions against heads of all the tertiary institutions in Nigeria in order to create avenue to extort money from them..
This was disclosed in a letter written to President Muhammadu Buhari and signed by no fewer than three executives of the association as follows: Sunday Ogbu, Assistant Secretary; Josephet Onwuegbu, National Treasurer; and, Aisha Hussaini, Ex-Officio.
The student body, while declaring Obasi persona non-grata, claimed he poses to unsuspecting individuals as the authentic President of the association even in mosques and churches.
The letter reads in part: “We, the National Executives of NANS received with shock numerous cases of impersonation by one Chukwunonso Obasi, who poses to unsuspecting individuals as the authentic President of the association.
“The worst of all is the impersonation of NANS at the National mosque and church in Abuja.
“Hence, we deem it fit to communicate to you (President Muhammadu Buhari) that Chukwunonso Obasi is not and has never been the NANS President and has no right at all times to represent NANS.
“He has also been declared persona non-grata in all high institutions in Nigeria for writing frivolous petitions against heads of Nigerian institutions to create avenue to extort money from them. The administrations of these institutions have known him.
“Hence all his threats are self-serving, and have no mandate from the National secretariat and Nigerian students as a whole.”
The group also issued a Public Disclaimer posted in major cities around the country urging members of the public with useful information of Obasi’s activities in the capacity of NANS president to report to the nearest police station or contact the National Secretariat of the association in University of Benin, Edo state which is operated by one Comrade Aruna Kadiri.
In his reaction, Comrade Chukwunonso Obasi maintained he is the authentic President of the student body; describing his traducers as ‘faceless losers’ who were yet to get over their loss at a credible election.
He explained that the appearances at the National Mosque and Church in Abuja were in conjunction with other Nigerians who prayed for the speedy recovery of President Buhari.
He said: “Who are the faceless losers who after losing a credible election, decided to go about with tales by the moonlight?
“Nigeria has not descendent to the level where people could make false claims without the censure of the law.
“Without wasting words, let me inform you that I am the National President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).
“It might interest you to know that recently we joined other Nigerians to pray for the recuperation and early return of President Muhammadu Buhari, which successful event was rounded off at the National Mosque, Abuja and at the Faith Miracle Ministries International also in Abuja.
“We have continued to render principled and purposeful leadership to Nigerian students. As such we are tired of responding to the distracting tantrums of hirelings who want to carry the bitterness of their loss to a new low.” Meanwhile, news sources say that Comrade Chukwunonso Obasi, who is currently studying for a masters’ degree at Ebonyi State University was duly elected as National President of the association at the 31st NANS convention held on the 20th of July 2016 at ombe Township statdium after police quelled violence that broke which forced some participants to scamper for safety.
According to reports, Taiwo Bamigbade of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, was equally elected the president of NANS senate. After which Obasi and his team were received by Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo of Gombe State.
It could be recalled that since he assumed office, Obasi led the student body to declare three days of prayers for President Muhammadu Buhari’s quick recovery and early return to Nigeria form London where he sojourned for medical vacation.
He also disclosed that the he association under his leadership had uncovered multi-million Naira assets directly and indirectly acquired by some Vice Chancellors; their proxies, family members, and siblings using looted funds meant for the development their respective universities.
Obasi also disowned a purported plan by NANS to protest against Xenophobic attacks meted on Nigerians living in South Africa
