The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has sealed off Di-Ocha bread factory located at Vin Road 1, Iva-Valley in Enugu-North Council Area of Enugu State.
The factory was closed down for allegedly producing bread with ‘potassium bromate’.
Addressing journalists on the development, the Enugu State Acting head of NAFDAC, Barrister Ikechukwu Okoye disclosed that the bread factory was not registered with NAFDAC.
He described the labels of the said bread as misleading, noting that “the address in the bread label is different from where the factory is actually located”.
He stressed that NAFDAC and other sister agencies had banned the use of potassium bromate in producing bread.
According to him, potassium bromate causes cancer, tariod tumour, renal tumour and others strange ailments.
He further disclosed that when the team of inspectors from the agency arrived the factory site, the operator took to his heels.
Items recovered from the factory include leaflet, container loaded with potassium bromate, among others.
