NAFDAC impounds confectioneries worth N2.5m

Confectioneries worth N2.5m were yesterday confiscated at the Ogbaru Relief Market, in Anambra State by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control.

NAFDAC operatives, on visiting the market, sealed 12 shops filled with confectioneries and milk candies for children.

According to Mr. Anslem Okonkwor, the Public Relations Officer of NAFDAC, the confectioneries impounded were not certified by the agency and are substandard.

Okonkwo said, “The raid came as a result of complaints made to us that people were bringing into the market confectionery, which NAFDAC had not approved for human consumption.”

The Chief Regulatory Officer of NAFDAC, Mr. Joseph Idowu, noted that the agency is finding it difficult to make the traders to cooperate in the fight against fake and substandard product.

“We were unable to arrest even one of the culprits to serve as a deterrent to others due to the posture of the market leadership.

“One of them called the four fake product dealers that were reported to us, and asked them to escape before we got to them,” Idowu noted.
