The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in Cross River on Monday said that it had arrested a suspected fake drugs dealer.
Mr Isaac Kolawole, the head of NAFDAC in the state, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Calabar that the suspect had been on the agency’s wanted list for almost one year.
The official said that the suspect was arrested on Feb. 25 by two policemen attached to the agency in the state.
According to him, the suspect has been involved in selling fake drugs without NAFDAC’s registered number.
“ He has been on our wanted list for almost a year now. He specialises in selling fake drugs to pharmacies and chemists in the state.
“During his arrest, we recovered from him fake Tramadol 200 milligrams, Buscomac 10 milligrams and Aldomet 250 milligrams.
“We have since handed him over to the police for further actions and he would be brought to court soon.
“We will not waver in our commitment to stamping out fake drugs and adulterated food products in the state and the country at large,’’ he said.
Kolawole also said that the agency had closed down a bakery because it was using `potassium bromate’ in baking bread.
The agency, he said, sealed the bakery in March 2016 at Yakurr Local Government Area of the state while the owner fled on sighting officials.
“We have also arrested and sanctioned a good number of fake sachet water producers in the state this year.
“Some of them, who could not meet our standard and registration guidelines, were closed down,’’ he said.
He warned those involved in the selling of fake drugs and adulterated consumable products to desist, saying that anyone caught would face the law.
