The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, on Wednesday arraigned five persons namely, Osita Paul, Solomon Ezeani, Chinedu Azugwu, Jonathan Uti and Issac Uti before the Federal High Court, sitting in Asaba, Delta State over possession of fake drugs.
The accused persons were arraigned on a three-count charge of importation, possession and trading in fake, unwholesome and banned drugs.
While testifying in court, the prosecutor, Mr Umar Shamaki, said the defendants were apprehended on September 7 at No. 2 Charles Edozie Street, Asaba with the fake drugs.
According to Shamaki, the offences contravened Section 1 of the Counterfeit and Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Food (Miscellaneous provisions) Act. CAP C34 LFN 2004 and punishable under Section 3(a) of the same Act.
When the charges were read, the accused persons however pleaded not guilty.
Mrs Patricia Ugbo, counsel to Osita Paul, one of the defendants, prayed the court to grant her client bail, adding that if granted bail, her client has `important personalities’ who could produce him whenever he is needed.
Following the bail submission, Justice C.M.A Olatoregun-Ishola granted the accused persons bail in the sum of N2 million each with two sureties in like sum.
Ishola consequently adjourned the case till December 14 for further hearing.
