The Centre for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership, CACOL, has hailed the House of Representatives for calling for the sack of the Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Mustapha Maihaja over the alleged mismanagement of ₦33b.

CACOL said that the call by the Reps for President Muhammadu Buhari to sack the NEMA DG was in the right direction.

This was contained in a press release issued to DAILY POST on Friday by the Executive Chairman of CACOL, Debo Adeniran.

CACOL also endorsed the House’s decision which also listed funds Maihaja was asked to refund.

CACOL described the recommendation of the House as another right step in the war against corruption and commended the Ad hoc committee for carrying out a diligent probe of the case.

The statement added, “Maihaja’s dismissal will further reassure Nigerians that the current administration’s vow to eradicate corruption holistically could be achieved.

“It baffles every right-thinking Nigerian why a public office holder who is put in charge to ensure that victims of unforeseen emergencies would engage in corrupt practices to enrich his already fat pocket at the expense of thousands of Nigerians who are victims of natural disaster. That is the highest display of man’s inhumanity to his fellow men and should not be left unpunished.

“We urge President Muhammadu Buhari to implement the decision of the House and dismiss the NEMA DG in order to serve as a deterrent to others who might be contemplating committing similar crimes.

“We also urge the anti-graft agencies to ensure that Maihaja and all others involved in perpetrating this heinous crime are adequately punished.”
