Some female workers at the Rumbu Rubber Mat Factory in Kano have appealed to the management of the company to increase their salaries.
The women made the call in an interview in Kano on Friday.
They said the wage increase would help cushion their current economic hardship.
According to them, the N16,000 monthly salary for each of them is grossly inadequate, considering the amount of work they do.
One of the women, Mrs Adeola Martins, said: “We wake up as early as 6 a.m. and close late in the evening every day.
“Our work is hectic, demanding, challenging and it takes one’s time a lot.
“You see in this factory, weaving a mat is not easy and it requires extra efforts and energy.
“The work requires a hardworking person. Not just anybody can work here because it requires strong hands,’’ she said.
Another worker, Mrs Jidda Usman, said: “If you must work in this factory, you need a lot of patience and endurance because it is a tedious work.’’
Reacting to the demand, an official of the company who spoke on behalf of the Chairman, Alhaji Hassan Musa, said there was a plan to increase the workers’ salary.
He blamed the delay in the implementation of the plan to the decline in business activities in the state, which had affected the company.
Musa said the current insecurity situation in the north eastern part of the country had seriously affected the business, as most of their products were being purchased from the affected areas.
“We hope to increase their salary once the issue of insurgency is addressed in Maiduguri, Adamawa, Cameroon and Niger Republic, where we have the largest markets,’’ he said.
He called on the affected workers to exercise patience as the management of the company was not insensitive to their plight. (NAN)
