A 40-year-old robbery suspect, George Orhewere has confessed that he plotted with robbers to steal his employer’s vehicle three weeks after he was employed.
Orhewere who was arrested over the weekend by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, Ikeja, said he connived with members of his gang to enable him raise funds to secure the release of his step-brother, who is an inmate in Sagamu Minimum Prison, Ogun Prison.
According to Vanguard, the Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, had assigned SARS operatives to investigate the case, after one Rosemary Aigoro petitioned Lagos State Police Command that her driver, one George Orhewere, who was directly employed by Haspol Jinim Resource Company situated at Ifako Gbagada Lagos, stole her Toyota Sienna car, with number plates KJA407DC.
The driver deceived the house help by collecting the ignition key to the car on the pretence that he was going to see his girlfriend, the report claims.
In his confession on Wednesday, Orhewere said, “My step-brother told me that his friend, Rafiu, a car dealer, who rob cars here and sell in Cotonou will come to me.
“I told him I had not done it before; he said there is no harm in trying and that when Rafiu contacts me, I should sell my boss vehicle.
“Rafiu and I took the car to Cotonou. He promised to pay N800, 000 for the car, but he has not given me a dime. I stole the vehicle on December, 7, 2015.”
“I was arrested when I came back from Cotounu because I was not paid, I had no place to put my head and they were pushing me to leave their town. I had to leave their town and come back to Lagos.
“I was at Okoko in Ojo when one of my sisters saw me and raised alarm shouting that they have been looking for me since my boss arrested my relatives because I stole his vehicle.
“She raised alarm calling me ‘ole’, ‘ole’ and that was how people caught me and handed me over to the police,” Orhewere added.
