A woman, Tawakalitu Kareem, yesterday, told a Mapu Customary Court in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, that the only thing her husband, Bolaji Kareem, liked about her were her money and sex.
Hide quoted text Tawakalitu, a mother of five, had approached the court to ask for the dissolution of her marriage to Kareem.
She alleged that her husband was “careless about the family’s welfare, house rent, feeding, school fees of the children and other functions of a family head.”
According to her, since she got married to him, she had not been enjoying the marriage because of what she maintained was his nonchalant attitude to the family’s needs, alleging, “the only area he cares about is when he wants to have sex with me.”
Tawakalitu explained that Kareem was initially giving her N30 weekly for feeding, but when their children interfered, he increased it to N300, saying she had sold all her clothes to care for her children’s education and feeding.
She said, “I decided to take this step so that I can have rest of mind. I have warned him never to follow me to the new house I rented because he won’t pay for rent even if I allow him.”
Kabiru, one of Kareem’s children, who represented his father in court, said that his father did not intend to divorce his mother but that if she insisted she wanted to leave her matrimonial home, that would mean she has decided to disown even her children.
Kabiru said he had waded into the issue but his parents were not sincere in disclosing the problems in their marriage to their children.
The president of the court, Chief Odunade Ademola, held that with the respective evidence the couple presented, it was obvious there was no love between the couple anymore.
Ademola, therefore, dissolved the 26-year-old marriage and ordered Kareem to pay N5,000 to Tawakalitu for the feeding of their last child, Quayoom. He also told him to ensure he pays for the boy’s education and health bills till he grows old enough to decide where to stay.
