“My husband is less concerned about his low-sperm count” – Woman laments in court

Tired of her husband’s alleged proclivity to continuously use her as a punching bag, a 35-year-old petty trader, Ajinatu Samuel, has ran to an Agege Customary Court, Lagos, for succour.

The mother of one in her petition prayed the court to dissolve her nine-year old union with her husband, saying that her husband, Akinsola hasn’t been man enough to handle his responsibilities.

As if that wasn’t enough, Ajinatu had complained that he hits her mercilessly at a slightest provocation.

But in a more objective presentation, embittered Ajanaku also claimed that Akinsola often feels remorseful after beating her blue and black; he would later come to beg her and claim that it was the devil that pushed him into the unfortunate act.

Stating more reasons she opted for dissolution as the remedy to their unstable marriage, the trader claimed that aside her husband’s nonchalant attitude towards her and their only child, he is an unrepentant drunk and has a weakness for stealing her money. For the same reasons, she could no longer keep money in the house or her shop.

She narrated to the court how it took them a while before she became pregnant.

Divulging further, she accused her estranged husband of adopting a lackadaisical attitude towards the doctor’s confirmation that he has a low sperm count, which made it nearly impossible for her to conceive. She had also bought drugs for him, but she was not sure he took them.

“The doctor told him that he had to take care of himself and come for treatment if he wanted us to conceive again, but he does not take care of himself,” Ajinatu said.

She added that she got a shop for her husband and her brother and that both of them were selling garri, but her husband’s business collapsed, while his younger brother’s is still thriving.

All efforts she had made to urge the family members to mediate in their affair to restore peace proved abortive. Ajinatu urged the court to grant her custody of their son and mandate Akinsola to pay his school fees and provide money for his feeding. She demanded for N12, 000 monthly for feeding, N17,000 for education and another N5,000.

Contrary to the allegations leveled against him, 38-year-old Akinsola told the court that while he was wooing his wife, he never had low sperm count problem. He re-affirmed his undying love for his wife and wouldn’t want to divorce her because she “knows me in-and-out.”

He also accepted that he was jobless now and that it was true his brother was still in business, but his goods perished last year.

Refuting all other allegation against him, Akinsola told the court that his wife hadn’t said the real reason she wanted to quit the marriage. He stated that he had gone to his wife’s village in order to settle their problem.

“Her people settled everything but she was unhappy because my mother was not present at the meeting. She was away in Kaduna,” he said.

Meanwhile, the presiding judge, Emmanuel Shokunle, advised the respondent to raise some money, start up a business, and become more responsible. He therefore adjourned the case for further hearing.
