Edo State Government has put on hold the setting up of a panel of enquiry into the killing of Mr. Ibrahim Momodu, a student of the University of Benin.
A statement presented to newsmen by the Government House said the decision is premised on the following, ‘Whereas Governor Adams Oshiomhole had promised to set up a judicial panel of enquiry into the killing of Ibrahim Momodu, events have overtaken this pronouncement as the case file on the late Momodu has since been submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions by the Police for advice and further action.”
It noted that it will therefore amount to a duplication of efforts by Government to set up another panel of enquiry since the Director of Public Prosecutions is a government functionary in the state Ministry of Justice.
“Accordingly, Government is therefore of the view that it is sufficient at this point to wait for the outcome of the investigation and advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions before any other step is taken by Government.”
Oshiomhole, while addressing students of the institution who protested his killing, has promised to set up an inquiry to probe the matter.
On its part , the Inspector-General of Police, MD Abubakar, last Saturday, directed the Edo State Commissioner of Police “to take urgent and appropriate steps to unravel the real circumstances that led to the death.”
It would be recalled that last week, the police announced the redployment of the Divisional Police Officer of Ogida Police Station, Carol Afegbai, who was alleged to have personally shot Momodu, saying the move was to allow “a thorough investigation” of the incident.
