Moyes warns Rooney that Van Persie is first choice

David Moyes has warned Wayner Rooney, that he will only get his chance upfront if Robin van Persie is injured.

The new Manchester United manager, has already insisted he will not sell Rooney, who is unsettled at Old Trafford, but made it clear that his playing time will depend on if he sees as Van Persie’s ideal partner, or in a number 10 midfield role, which he is keen on playing Shinji Kagawa.

“Wayne can play up on his own, he can play dropped in. Overall my thought on Wayne is, if for any reason we had an injury to Robin van Persie, we’ll need him,” he said during United’s pre-season tour of Asia and Australia.

“I want to be able to play the two of them, I want to use Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez as well. I want to give myself as many options as possible.”

Chelsea, Arsenal, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, have all been linked with moves for the 27-year-old, who is currently nursing an injury.
