Miranda’s 98th minute header, ensured that Athletico Madrid triumphed over their fierce rivals Real Madrid on their own turf, in a feisty Copa Del Rey final.
It was a keenly contested Madrid derby and Jose Mourinho’s men started brightly, backed by their noisy fans inside the Santiago Bernabeu. Cristiano Ronaldo gave the Los Blancos the lead inside the first 15 minutes, rising highest to meet Ozil’s corner with a thumping header.
Diego Costa levelled up in the 35th minute, after excellent work from Falcao, as both sides went into the break all square.
Real hit the woodwork three times in the second half, but failed to find the back of the net. Tempers began to flare as both teams searched for the winner, flying into tackles with the referee eagerly pulling out his yellow. Mourinho was also sent off, for protesting Sergio Ramos’ booking, before Miranda struck the killer blow in extra time.
There was also enough time for Ronaldo and Gabi to be sent off, as both sides ended the game with 10 men,
It is the Rojiblancos 10th Copa trophy and the victory ended a 25-match winless run in Madrid derbies.
