The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Nasarawa State Command, said it had prosecuted 112 persons for violating traffic rules and other related offences during the last yuletide and Eid-el-Mouloud festivals. The Sector Commander, Mrs Faustina Alegbe, disclosed this to newsmen on Monday in Lafia.
According to Alegbe, out of the 117 offenders arrested, 112 were convicted and fined, while five were discharged.
She said that the offenders were arraigned before a Magistrate at a mobile court session in Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area of the state in December 2015.
“In December 2015, we had a mobile court at Nasarawa Eggon and as I speak to you now, another mobile court is in session at Akwanga Local Government Area.
“Our goal is to enforce the law to the fullest and minimise traffic offences and its attendant consequences on our highways,” she said.
The sector commander also said that the state recorded 74 road accidents in December 2015 as a result of overtaking and speed limit violation.
“There were lots of road crashes in that particular month, about 74 of them are known to the command. The rate was high because it was a festive period,” she said.
She said the command was taking steps to sensitise the public through workshops and seminars to the need to drive safely and adhere strictly to the highway rules and regulations.
