Monkeypox: Suspected victim hospitalized in Benue

A female victim suspected to have been infected with monkey pox was on Wednesday taken into the custody of the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH).

It was gathered that the patient was moved from her home at the Gboko area of the state by medical personnel from the state Ministry of Health.

The State Director of Public Health, Dr. Terna Kur, told newsmen that the sample of the patient’s blood had been taken and sent to the appropriate quarters for further investigation to enable the health ministry confirm the suspicion.

Kur said, “the initial history showed classical result that the patient had contact with some one infected with the disease in a neighbouring state and that all hands are on deck to monitor those she had also come in contact with outside or within the state.”

He noted that the family members of the victim were also being followed closely even though they had not showed any sign of rashes or symptoms similar to that of the patient.

Kur called on residents of the state to remain calm as the ministry had put everything in place to curtail any spread of the disease in the event the suspicion was confirmed.
