Following apprehension that some of the ministerial nominees will not be able to pass the screening hurdle of the Senate following their apparent unlikelihood of getting the endorsement of at least two senators from their states, the Senate has clarified that the convention may be waived if a nominee passes other criteria of the screening.
The Upper Chamber of the National Assembly made this disclosure on Sunday via a tweet posted on its Twitter handle @NGRSenate.
The tweet simply reads, “The tradition of two Senators having to endorse a ministerial nominee is not sacrosanct and can be waived if a nominee passes other criteria.”
If this clarification is anything to go by, nominees such as former Rivers governors, Rotimi Amaechi, and a former Special Assistant on Millennium Development Goals, Amina
Mohammed, whose inclusion in Buhari’s ministerial list had been fraught with petitions from their respective states, including their Senators, may now have less to worry about.
